1 Thirst Things to Check

This may seem stupid but check your mic and speakers are plugged in the correct port and have not been jarred loose. All modern computers have a little mic and speaker icon on the port so look carefully. Ensure the power is turned on and that you have the volume turned on..

Is your sound card working.. Can you hear music from a cd played on your puter or via winamp etc. If you can your card is obviously fine.. if you cannot you need to check the hardware device is installed and you have the latest drivers.

To Access the device manager right click the my computer icon and select Manage and then device manager. Sound video and game controllers is the category you want. Ensure the device is listed and a driver installed.

If it is.. go to www.google.com and do a search for your sound card driver.. see if there is an updated version. If so download and install it.

Now test your voice with windows voice recorder. Start, Programs, Accessories, Sound and Multimedia and the Sound recorder. Simply try to record your voice and play it back. If you can do this you are ready to try Messenger voice.

Now download and run the audio configuration wizard by clicking here and follow the steps in the audio wizard, This is a very useful tool for testing your voice ..if it fails it will usually give you an error message that may clue you in as to the problem.

2 Voice in use by another application

It is likely you have another audio program running silently in the background. Experience shows this is usually “Realplayer” So what you must do is open realplayer and search through the programs options and find where it is checked to load on startup.. uncheck it to prevent this happening. Alternatively you can disable it from “Msconfig” or simply uninstall “Realplayer” and reboot.

If you do not have “realplayer” installed check what audio programs you do have. Any audio player that loads in the background could be the problem.. disable them from running at startup ..you can still start them automatically.

Msconfig is an area of windows where programs can be set to auto load. To access this area you meed to click start and select run then type in MSCONFIG This opens a box.. select startup tab and you will see several programs listed, most will have fairly obtuse names so you need to check with a site that has a list of ‘startup entry descriptions’ There are literally hundreds of programs that can load in the startup so you MUST check this carefully no matter how time consuming it is to check each one. DO NOT delete a program unless you know what it is. A good site to check the startup entries is http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

3 Truespeech DSP codec not installed

DSP true speech comes with all windows distributions and seldom is missing... what usually happens is that you have an audio program running that is taking the audio as your machine starts.. invisibly to the user.

Best way to fix this is to run download and install it by clicking here.

4 Cannot join audio conference

This message is common if you are booted or disconnected unexpectedly. What happens is that you have been disconnected without logging out so Yahoos voice server does not realise you left. The voice server is independent to the chat text server so just being able to log into the room does not mean voice is free.

To fix this either log in on another id or alias and you should have voice or simply wait 5 to15 minutes for Yahoo to update the voice server.

5 Static or hissing or helicopter syndrome on the mic.

Try to ensure that your wires to the mic or to the speakers are as far away from electrical power sources as possible.. this limits magnetic interference and may help. Ensure the mic has a good connection.. by pulling out the jack and just lightly moistening it with your tongue and re-inserting it. Dont go stupid with this.. dont cover the jack in saliva just lightly wet it ..daft as this sounds it often helps considerably.

6 Voice To Loud

Adjust This on Win 98/ME/2000 and XP try going into the Recording controls by double clicking on the speaker icon by your click and going to Options then properties and putting a dot in Recording and clicking OK then move the slider for mic down and see if this helps if you find you moved the slider as far down as it will go click on the advanced button and un-check mic boost (if you dont see advanced button click on options then advanced controls)

Adjust this on Vista right click the speaker icon by the clock and choose recording device and click on microphone and then click the properties once it opens click on the levels tab and slide the adjust to the left and see if that helps if you cant lower it anymore click the custom tab and make sure mic boost is un-checked and try the mic.

7. Voice too quiet

Adjust This on Win 98/ME/2000 and XP try going into the Recording controls by double clicking on the speaker icon by your click and going to Options then properties and putting a dot in Recording and clicking OK then move the slider for mic up and see if this helps if you find you moved the slider as far up as it will go click on the advanced button and check mic boost (if you dont see advanced button click on options then advanced controls)

Adjust this on Vista right click the speaker icon by the clock and choose recording device and click on microphone and then click the properties once it opens click on the levels tab and slide the adjust to the right and see if that helps if you cant raise it anymore click the custom tab and make sure mic boost is checked and try the mic

8. Your own voice comes back through your speakers or headphone.

Stop This on Win 98/ME/2000 and XP This is almost always caused by not having the Microphone Wave Balance slider muted. double click on the speaker icon by the clock and Find microphone and check mute. Then test voice again.

.Stop This on Vista Right click the speaker icon by the clock and select Playback Devices and select speakers and then click the properties button once this is open click on levels and click on speaker icon next to microphone and it should change to a speaker icon with a red circle.

9. Mic cuts out and mutes every few minute.

This is often caused by a firewall or some other filtering program on your system. Routers in particular can cause this effect and you must use port triggering or port forwarding to solve this. I have an example of how to fix this for the linksys wireless router but the same principle will apply to all hardware routers.

Another cause could be your software firewall or any type of adfiltering program. If you are having trouble with voice turn off all software filtering and firewalls while you test to ensure that these are not the cause. Testing these one at a time should quickly show you which it is if this is indeed the cause.

10. Messenger cannot enable voice because you are behind a firewall message.

First if you are behind a firewall you will probably know because you will have had to install it yourself.. An exception to this is that ‘some’ pre-installed versions of windows xp may have the inbuilt firewall set to default. If you are on XP check this just to be sure-

Click Start, Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, select the Internet connection, Network Tasks, Change settings of this connection, Advanced tab, Internet Connection Firewall, uncheck the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

Now you are sure your firewall is not enabled, Open messenger click Login and select preferences and connections.. Make sure that it is set to either ‘No Proxies or No network detection’. then try voice again.

If you are behind a hardware firewall you must enable port forwarding or port triggering if it is blocking you.. See the section above for doing this.

11 You have to press the speak button to hear people in voice.

Currently I don’t know of anyone who knows a fix for this or the reason it happens.

12. Check the correct sound device is selected.

Check This on Win 98/ME/2000 and XP double click the speaker icon by your clock then click on options then properties and put a dot in recording and click ok then make sure there a check mark in microphone if not then put one there and try sound again.

Check This on Vista Right click on the speaker icon by the clock and choose recording devices make sure there a green circle with a tick on the microphone picture if not select it and click the set default button.

13 Voice button not showing on messenger.

First check that voice is actually turned on in the messenger menu. It is easy to miss that. Second ensure you are not currently running another voice chat.. Yahoo voice will not usually allow you to voice in the room and in PM at the same time.

If all else fails try restarting messenger or uninstalling and reinstalling.

14 Monster Voice

If your voice is sounding like it is in slow motion or you sound like the Budweiser frog. First check your Soundcard. This is a known problem with Soundmax onboard audio. The solution is to update your soundcard driver . DELL who have been using this card now have the driver on there site to fix this problem. . What happens with this card is that you have voice when you first log in but as soon as you have spoken and someone else keys the mouse your voice turns into monster voice syndrome. This can also happen randomly to other voice users.. usually rebooting fixes it in this instance.

15 Play Voice Directly into the room

Win 98/ME/2000 and XP click here.

Vista click here.

16 No Voice in Vista

To get it working you need the latest version of yahoo messenger 8.1 build 244 or above and you need to install the true speech codec from http://www.bytescribe.com/downloads/tsp_codec_install.exe

Give credit where credit is due is my thing so thanks goes to gully for some of the fixes though there old and outdated i have taken them and updated them!
