You have the option to Use a Avatar or use a Photo there is a difference between the two.

Avatars

Avatar is a character that you can personalize and use when interacting with friends online as Yahoo! puts it.

  • Click on big image you see before you Yahoo! (should look like this change avatar but bigger)
  • Click Edit My Avatar.
  • You will be taken to Yahoo's site just follow the instructions.

Pictures

You can choose any photograph or picture to be displayed to other people during an IM conversation as yahoo! puts it.

  • Click on big image you see before you Yahoo! (should look like this change avatar but bigger)
  • Click Browse and find the image you want to use and click Open.
