The internet is a big place to let your kids onto so here is some tips to help you keep them safe!
The First thing I'm going to say is do not allow your kids to have Internet in the bedrooms this is the biggest mistake people make. From the privacy of their own room they can get up to all sorts of things, the internet a big place and it is a fact that most kids are more computer savvy that their parents. If you allow them to have this power their certainly going to do allot of things behind your back.
Bebo, Facebook, myspace Tips
- Make sure their profile is private so that only people who are added as friends can view their content.
- Constantly check that their profile is still set to private because they can easily change this behind your back.
- If you allow them to add pictures to bebo, facebook, myspace etc make sure you check them constantly because you will be shocked at some of the pics kids will upload of themselves.
- Always keep a eye on what their doing on bebo, facebook, and myspace and who they have on their friends list because these site offer features like private messages, comments, emails etc which sickos can use to talk to your child.
- Always check that they have not posted there contact details on these sites such as telephone numbers or there address.
Instant Messenger (msn yahoo, aim, etc) Tips
- If you allow your kids to use instant messenger programs then keep a very close eye on them cause lots of stuff will start happening behind you back and even if you think you got a god eye on it lol they have ways of hiding stuff from you.
- Make sure to limit the time spent on instant messenger programs cause kids take advantage of them to much.
- Be aware that on instant messenger programs are more than just chat they can do many things like send files to each other, send dirty emotes/smiley's to one another, use webcams and more... so always be aware of what going on.
- If in doubt get yourself a program like Family Cyber Alert to monitor there activity.
- Make sure your child knows how to block and delete contacts and how to save conversations just incase one of the sickos do happen to contact them.
Other Safety Tips
- Install filters to restrict the sites you kids should not be visiting.
- Make sure you have a firewall and anti virus program installed and they are up to date to protect the pc.
- Keep a eye on what their doing on the internet don't just think cause you have filters and parental control software that they can't get up to anything bad.
- Try not to allow your kids to use webcam's if you do allow them to make sure they ask your permission first and that they only allow people they know to view it.
Online Gaming Sites
Most kids these days love playing games online and most of them now include chat, instant messages and voice which can be taken advantage of so don't assume there safe playing games still keep a eye on them get to know what games there playing and see if it allows them to chat privately if it does then i suggest keeping a close eye on them!
Get Involved!
- Get involved in what yours kids are doing on the internet and discuss it with them.
- Make up internet rules about what allowed and disallowed and how much time should be spent on the internet.
- Talk to your child about the dangers that lurk on the internet and let them know they can tell you if they have any experience where they felt uncomfortable about a online experience.
